Died on this date - 27th January........Private John Joseph Hickey was born in Port Melbourne, Victoria in 1894. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 16th February, 1916 as a 21 year old Seaman.

Private Hickey was transferred from 58th Battalion to 60th Battalion on 24th May, 1916 in Egypt. After being AWL he arrived in France on 29th June, 1916.

Private Hickey was wounded in action on 19th July, 1916 with GSW to hands. He was invalided to England & discharged on 30th August, 1916.

Private Hickey was once again AWL & written up for other offences & was awarded 28 days detention. He was sent back to France & rejoined 60th Battalion on 20th December, 1916.

Private Hickey was appointed Lance Corporal on 26th February, 1917 but reverted to the rank of Private on 6th July, 1917 at his own request.

Private Hickey was sent to Hospital on 25th September, 1917 & was classified as “Shell Shock Wounded” 2 days later. He was transferred to Convalescent Depot at Etaples, France on 5th October, 1917 & in the following month was absent from Roll Call on one occasion & drunk on another occasion.

Private Hickey was returned to his Battalion on 11th December, 1917. He was sent on leave to UK from 13th January, 1918.
Private John Joseph Hickey died at 5.30 pm on 27th January, 1918 at Edgy Curragh Military Hospital, Dublin, Ireland from Shock and Haemorrhage as a result of a Railway accident. He was buried in Bridgetown Catholic Churchyard, County Clare, Republic of Ireland in a family grave.
