Colin Lethbridge Raymond ELDER was born in Wollongong, NSW in 1898
His parents were Francis Rowling ELDER & Aphrasia Catherine KING who married in Sydney in 1881
He first applied to join the Army on 14th April, 1916 but was rejected as his chest measurement was insufficient - less than a month later on 3rd May, 1916 apparently it was improved enough for them to accept him

Two of his brothers also served during WW1
1. Eric Raymond ELDER (SN 4670) - Lieutenant in the Army - returned to Australia in 1919
2, Kenneth Raymond ELDER (SN 7309) - Sergeant in the Army - returned to Australia in 1918
