Son of Thomas Vane and Susan Vane of 'Brichmore', O'Connor Street, Haberfield, NSW. Brother of William Vane MM who returned to Australia on 29 December  1918 having served with the 19th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 11 January 1918 aboard HT Port Darwin disembarking on 4 March 1918

Husband of Weeta Everton Vane nee Bower. Address at the time of death was Dower Street, Chatswood, NSW. James and Weeta married during 1920c in Armidale, NSW
