Son of Thomas O'Grady of Merringundah, Cumberland, NSW.
On 14 July 1919 John married Lillian Louise Marsh in The Church of All Saints, Clifton, Bristol, England. Vicar Maurice P, Gillson officiated.
Commenced return to Australia 5 December 1919 aboard SS Lucy Wooman disembarking on 20 January 1920 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney.
