Served in The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
96 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 27th June 1924, Private Charles Bernard McArdle, 30th Battalion, labourer from 50 King Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 42. CATHOLIC 1-29. 44.
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article137633573 - funeral notice states service, surname misspelt McARDEL.
There are conflicting accounts of where Charles McArdle was born. His Attestation papers state that he was born in Newcastle, England about 1877 to parents unknown. Perhaps this was so Charles could state he was 'natural born?' Interestingly, his death certificate states he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA about 1882 to parents unknown (see attached death certificate). We certainly know Charles enlisted on 22nd July 1915 in Newcastle, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 28.8.1916 (enteritis), 29.8.1918 (exhaustion), Charles returned home June 1919, and was discharged medically unfit August 1919.
I have not located Mr McArdle’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
Service record states Died after Discharge.
Mr McArdle had been resting in an unmarked grave, long forgotten, so July 2019 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

An application for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip submitted January 2020, and was accepted February 2020.
When official commemoration is complete, I will post photos.
Many thanks to Michelle Foster for the extensive research to locate birth details, unfortunately nothing conclusive.
