3126 Private Sydney Carton Partridge 58th Battalion, A.I.F. Died of wounds 1st September 1916.
Sydney Partridge was a popular and valued member of the Footscray Rowing Club prior to the war.
Sydney’s older brother Frank enlisted at the same time and they were given consecutive regimental numbers in the 6th Battalion AIF. They were both transferred to the 58th Battalion with the ‘doubling’ of the AIF in in Egypt during early 1916.
Sydney Partridge was wounded in action during a large German raid on the Australian trenches near Fromelles. The trenches that the 58th Battalion were holding endured a furious bombardment for over 2 hours, which caused heavy casualties. A large party of Germans also attempted to break into the Australian line. The Germans captured 4 men of the 58th Battalion and about 42 men were killed and over 100 wounded, mainly due to the hurricane shelling. This occurred some four days before the disastrous Battle of Fromelles.
Sydney Partridge lingered for over six weeks in hospital before he succumbed to his wounds.
3125 Sgt. Frank Leslie Partridge DCM 58th Battalion was killed in action 26 April 1918, aged 26. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for Polygon Wood October 1917.
They were the sons of Squires David and Elizabeth Matilda Partridge, of Footscray, Victoria.
