Son of Alfred and Jane HORSLEY, 480 Bourke Street, Melbourne

Upon leaving school he joined his uncle for a time in farming pursuits on his uncle's estate near Arcadia.  Later he went to NSW an at the outbreak of war was in the Albury district, where in August 1914 he enlisted in the Field Artillery as a Driver.  He left Sydney with the No 3 Batttery, First AFA Brigade, First Australian Division, with the first contingent from Australian per S.S. Argyllshire.  He saw service in Egypt and on Gallipoli.  He was a tCape Helles with the guns and aws through the heavy fighting in that locality.  He returned to Egypt in charge of his gun teams, prior to the evaucation, and eventually was set to France.  With the exception of a short period on furlough, he was with his battery in action in France up to 5/11/16. when he was reported missing - believed wounded.  On 7/1/18 an offical notice from the military authorities stated that he was killed in action at Flers on 5/11/16.  At the time of his death he was aged 22 years.  At the time he was acting as runner between the observation officer and the battery, the telephone wire having been reapeatedly blown away.  He and another soldier were passing a dump of ammunition, when a shell exploded it, and neither were ever seen again.
