Son of Edward Upton and Elizabeth Upton of Sydenham Road, Marrickville, NSW.

11 September 1914 - enlisted at Kensington, NSW, with the 3rd Battalion and with the rank of Private

13 February 1916 - transferred to the 55th Battalion

21 February 1916 - promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal

24 April 1918 - wounded in action. gas poisoning  (severe)

27 April 1918 - invalided to England due to gassing

6 August 1918 - embarked at Taranto, Italy for Australia. Transhipped at Suez aboard HT Port Darwin on 15 November 1918 disembarking on 21 December 1918

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

24 February 1919 - discharged at the 2nd Military District

During 1922c Walter married Ethel Thurecht in Marrickvile, NSW

In 1928 Walter was residing in Ultima, NSW
