He had previous military experience before the war with the 23rd Light Horse Regiment.

The 3rd Light Horse Regiment was formed on the 17th of October 1914 in Adelaide. Todd joined this regiment as a Private on the 19th August 1914 at the age of 20 years and 4 months.  After some training he embarked from Adelaide 22nd October 1914 aboard the troopship HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) before arriving in Egypt in early December. Here they joined the 1st and 2nd Regiments to form the 1st Light Horse Brigade. With this group, Todd arrived in Gallipoli on the 12th of May 1915 joining the New Zealand and Australian Division. This division focused on the defending positions, rather than participating in the direct attack.

While at Gallipoli Todd became unwell. On the 17th of July he was admitted to the field ambulance with diarrhoea and was then a couple of weeks later transferred to the hospital Somali due to dysentery. He later disembarked at Malta where he was treated for his existing condition and an ailing foot. Todd was the transferred to base in Mustapha on 30th September. He returned to Gallipoli on 20th October and rejoined the 3rd Light Horse 25th October 1915. Following the withdrawal from Gallipoli he returned to Egypt 20th December 1915.

Todd was hospitalised with jaundice in January 1916 for a couple of weeks. He spent the remainde of the war fighting in the Middle East. His ill health continued with a couple of hospital stays during 1916. In 1918 he was treated for illness in March spending a few days in hospital and again became unwell with jaundice in early November. He was diagnosed with Malaria on the 11th November.

After the cessation of hostilities in November 1918 Todd returned to Adelaide 23rd December 1918, disembarking on the 28th of January 1919. Todd’s total service lasted 4 years and 223 days.

After the war he lived in Fullarton, a southern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia and married Daphne. Todd passed away on the 19th of November 1968 when he was 74 years old. He was buried in Centennial Park Cemetery. Daphne Todd passed away less than ten years later, on the 23rd of March 1978.
