Son of Joachim Vandenberg and Melenea Amelia Vandenberg of George Street, Singleton, NSW and of Granya, Victoria. Joachim served in the 4th Battalion enlisting on 21 January 1916 and returned on27 October 1917.

Brother of Joseph William Vandenberg who returned to Australia on 20 October 1919 having served with the 56th Battalion and Goulburn Henry Vandenberg who was discharged at Rabaul on 21 October 1919. 

Commenced return to Australia on 5 April 1919 aboard HT Armagh disembarking on 20 May 1919
