Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Lieutenant Colonel A.C. Fewtrell, D.S.O. son of Mr. John Fewtrell of Brisbane, was born in 1885, educated at the Townsville Grammar School, and afterwards trained for the engineering profession.  In civil life he had been resident engineer in the Existing Lines Department of the New South Wales Railways at Alexandria and Goulburn.  He always took a keen interest in military matters, having been connected with a submarine mining company in Queensland, and prior to enlisting he was captain in the Field Engineers in News South Wales.  During 1915 he was appointed as major in command of the 7th Field Company of Engineers, but was soon afterwards selected to command the Australian Mining Corps, and given the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  Major Professor David and Captain Pollock were attached to this Battalion.

On arrival at the front in May last the several companies of his battalion where attached to other units, and Colonel Fewtrell was given command of the 4th Pioneer Battalion.  For his work in Pozieres he was mentioned in despatches and given the D.S.O.  His wife and little son live in Neutral Bay.
