Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

An Original Anzac who served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.

63 years ago today, on the 31st October 1958, Lance Corporal George Newbound, 7th Battalion (Reg No-949), labourer from Gooramadda via Rutherglen, Victoria and Newcastle? N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 69. ANGLICAN 3-202. 47.

Born at Howlong, New South Wales on the 29th August 1889 to James and Susan Newbound; husband of Elsie Newbound nee Ford (married 22.5.1916 at Epsom, United Kingdom, died?), George enlisted August 1914 at Rutherglen, Victoria.

Wounded in action - 8.5.1915 (GSW shoulder), 28.10.1917 (GSW back), 9.8.1918 (GSW back).

Admitted to hospital 16.7.1915 (GSW foot), 4.12.1915 (enteric fever, severe), 15.11.1916 (bronchial catarrh).

George returned home January 1919 (Special 1914 Leave), being discharged on the 28th March 1919.

Mr. Newbound’s name has been inscribed on the Howlong Great War Roll of Honor.

I located George resting in an unmarked grave, so May 2015 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore Honour and Dignity to this Great War veteran.

Lest We Forget.
