Son of William Henry Unwin and Margaret Unwin nee Bourke of Loch, South Gippsland, Victoria.

28 May 1915 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 14th Battalion and with the rank of Private.

21 Novwmber 1916 - promoted to Lance Corporal later reverted to Private when found guilty of breaking camp and being improperly dressed in the Company Orderly Room

26 January 1917 - wounded. Wounds to both legs and a severe wound to the right arm

Commenced return to Australia on 22 July 1917 aboard HT Nestor disembarking on 24 September 1919.

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

19 November 1917 - discharged at the 3rd Military District as wounded
