Son of Richard William Vanderfield and Eliza Vanderfield of 'Carinya', New Canterbury Road, Hurlstone Park, NSW.
Between 14 March 1919 and 14 May 1919 he was employed with J.W. Turner engineer of London, England. He was granted an extension between 15 to 25 May 1919 as supervising engineer with the Automatic Telephone Exchange, Leeds.
Commenced return to Australia on 4 July 1919 aboard HT Wiltshire diembarking at Melbourne on 19 August 1919 for onward travel to Sydney.
