Biography

Cecil Mathew FOULIS was born on 20th September, 1893 in Horrocks Creek near Wilmington, South Australia

He enlisted on 22nd December 1914 with the Australain Army - his posting at death was with the 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance - taken on strength on 16th April, 1915 - Unit embarked from Adelaide on 23rd June 1915 on ship BORDA

His brother 2870 Cpl. Bruce McKenzie FOULIS (/explore/people/231419) also served in WW1 and returned to Australia in 1919

Cecil died of pneumonia at Choutrah Hospital on 20th August, 1915 - he is buried in the British Cemetery in Cairo. - he was awarded the 1914-15  Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal

LATE PRIVATE CECIL FOULIS

News of the death of Private C Foulis on August 20 at Choutrah Hospital, Egypt of pneumonia came as a great shock to his relatives & friends.  Deceased was of an exceptionally fine physique. The first news of his illness and death was received by his Mother on September 4.  He was the youngest son of the late Mr. George Foulis, Grazier of Horrocks Pass near Wilmington, where he was born and resided until 1911 when he left to live with his brother at Oodnadatta.  He enlisted from the latter place in December 1914 with the Light Horse and later was transferred to the 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance.  He proceeded to Egypt on June 23.  His upright manly character had won for him a large circle of friends by who he was highly esteemed.  Deceased was in the twenty second year of his life.
