Leslie's parents were Ernest Christian de Voss and Margaret Dunne. At the time of his enlistment in July 1916 Leslie was single and working in Redcliffe as a chauffeur. On his return from the war, Leslie he married Redcliffe girl, Ellen McCarthy in January 1919 and the couple moved to Brisbane.
