William enlisted in the AIF on 2 Nov 1915 from Dubbo NSW. SERN 6223. He gave his NoK as his brother, Frederick Louis Baxter. He has no brother by that name although his father was Frederick. He states that he was born in Gin Gin Qld on 28 Aug 1887 when in fact he was born in Miles on 31 Aug 1884. Returned to Australia for discharge deemed medically unfit in June 1918 suffering from Sandy Blight. (Trachoma)
William tried to re-enlisted in the AIF on 4 Sept 1918 from Mudgee NSW. He gave his NoK as C. H. Levins, Dunedoo, NSW. He states that he was born in Miles Qld on 28 Aug 1886. On his attestation form he states that he served in the AIF previously for 2 years 327 days. His service number (6223) is noted on his re-enlistment papers. He was found to be medically unfit due to complications of Sandy Blight. William's last known address was the State Hospital, Lidcombe, NSW in 1945, as he gave this address when sending a Statutory Declaration to Base Records, Victoria Barracks when requesting replacement discharge papers. There is no death death record in either Qld or NSW for William.
