Son of William James and Annie Hillis of 'Ingleside', Trafalgar, Victoria.

Brother of Stanley James Hilles who was killed in action on 14 June 1917while serving with the Australian Artillery 10th Brigade, 110 Howitzer Battery. Stanley was buried in the Kandahar Farm Cemetery, Plot 11, Row B, Grave 16
