Son of Henry Orpen and Rebecca Beatrice Orpen nee Duckett of Melbourne, Victoria.
Prior to enlisting in the A.I.F. Henry served with the Royal Australian Naval Reserve for several years including eight months with the Naval & Military Force in New Guinea with the rank of Petty Officer.
Husband of Edith Rosina Orpen nee Thomas of Blair Street, Moreland, Victoria. Henry and Edith married during 1915c in Victoria.
Commenced return to Australia on 31 Januarry 1918 aboard HT Osterley disembarking on 13 April 1918
