Alfred Herbert Cornish was born in January 1896 in Brinkworth South Australia. His parents was Charles Cornish and Agnes Amy Lee Cornish. Alfred worked as a farmer prior to enlisting 27th October 1915.

On July 30th, 1915, Alfred joined the Australian Imperial Force in Adelaide. He was only 19 years old. His father, Charles Cornish, was listed as his next of kin. He joined the 48th Battalion.

After his training, Alfred left Australia on October 27th, 1915, on a troopship called the HMAT Benalla the trip took about four weeks and he disembarked in Egypt.

Alfred and his battalion joined thousands of other ANZAC soldiers training for war. In early 1916, Alfred became sick with mumps and was taken to the hospital in Abbassia, near Cairo, on January 2nd. He stayed there for about three weeks and was discharged January 24th. He rejoined his unit at Ismailia on February 5th .

In April he spent a couple of days in hospital but the details are unknown. Alfred was appointed Lance Corporal 20th April 1916. He proceeded to France disembarking at Marseilles 9th June 1916.  He was promoted to Corporal 13th October 1916.

 Alfred was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) for his hard work and valuable service.

Alfred returned to South Australia and was formally discharged 10th October 1919. He farmed at Lameroo for the remainder of his life. He passed away on May 23, 1943, aged 47 and was buried in the Lameroo Cemetery.
