Arnold went to Egypt with the 3rd Light Horse. He suffered a slight bullet wound to the elbow and a compound fracture on 4 August 1916 for which he was treated at Romani and later at Ismailla on 6 August at the 14th Australian General Hospital. The wound became septic on 22 September. Arnold’s condition deteriorated to the point that the Army reported to his mother on 2 October that he was dangerously ill due to sepsis. He was invalided to Australia from Suez on the Ayrshire on 20 November and discharged as permanently medically unfit on 7 June 1917. Arnold was granted a pension of 3 pounds per fortnight as of 19 May 1917.
