Jack was the eldest of nine children of Edwin Frederick Hughes (b1866 in Hobsons Bay, Victoria) and Sophia Elizabeth Mayman (b1873 in Sunbury, Victoria). Edwin - a Gardener - and Sophia (aka Elizabeth) married in 1894 in Wallam, Victoria and raised their family in the Macedon Ranges region. Edwin was a Farmer.
Jack was a Farm Labourer in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF. He served in France as a Private (Service No:2026) with 22nd and 58 Infantry Battalions and was WiA in France in 1917 (multiple GSW). Jack was Discharged in 1918.
In 1916 Jack married Ellen Healey (b1897 in Esdon, Victoria) in Melbourne, and they Divorced in 1917. Brother-in-Law Albert Ernest Matcott (Private; Service No:3564) also served in WWI, and Brother John Garret Hughes (Private; Service No:VX11812) and Brother-in-Law Colin Robert Landon Wilson (Corporal; Service No:VX24012) served in WWII.
In 1919 Jack was working as a Labourer in Melbourne, Victoria when he married Eliza Catherine Davey (b1897 in Ringwood, Victoria). Jack and Eliza settled in Melbourne, where Jack worked as a Labourer and Driver. Jack died in 1965 and Eliza in 1976.
