Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

John James BERRY, (Service Number 4010) was born on 5 February 1894 at Camperdown, Sydney. He commenced work in the Interlocking Branch of the NSW Railways as a tinsmith’s apprentice early in 1910 at the age of 16 years. He appears to have resigned in 1913 but was re-employed in the Signalling Branch as a tradesman tinsmith in February 1915.
He enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force in September and in January 1916 embarked for France, arriving at Marseilles in April 1916. By January 1917 he had been promoted to Sergeant.
He was killed in action on 10 November 1917. At first buried elsewhere, his body was exhumed in the rationalisation of cemeteries after the war and he now lies in Passchendaele New British Cemetery.
