Biography contributed by Evan Evans

Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

103 years ago today, on the 9th October 1917, Private Robert Easlea, 30th Battalion (Reg No-2325), fireman from Lacey's Creek, Upper North Pine, Brisbane, Queensland and Third Street, Weston, New South Wales, fell at the Battle of Poelcappelle, Belgium, during the Passchendaele Campaign, age 36.

Born at Tenterfield, New South Wales on the 26th January 1882 to Harry and Martha Easlea of Lacey's Creek, Dayboro, Queensland; husband of Blanche Easlea nee Brown (married 1915, died 1926, as DARRAGH, re-married to Edward James DARRAGH, 1920, of 29 James Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and First Street, Weston, N.S.W.), Robert enlisted September 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Pte Robert Easlea is resting at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. Plot XXXVIII Row E Grave 20.

Robert’s name has been inscribed on the Dayboro Showgrounds War Memorial.

Robert and Blanche married on the 19th May 1915 at Hamilton, N.S.W. Blanche died on the 27th July 1926, and is sleeping in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so September 2017, to honour the supreme sacrifice of her 1st husband Robert, I placed a memorial cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the memorialised grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service. BAPTIST-B NW. 27.

Blanche at Weston received gold broche.

Younger brother Charles (42nd Battalion, Reg No-3291, born 1887, KIA 31.8.1918 also fell during The Great War.

Lest We Forget.
