His parents owned a farm at Windsor near Dublin South Australia where Norman assisted in running the farm, but when he enlisted his wife was residing at Tennyson Street, Medindie.

Norman arrived at Plymouth on 11 October 1916 and a little over two months later on 28 December travelled to France aboard the SS Princess Clementine. He was taken on strength on 5 February 1917 in France and appointed Lance Corporal on 1 March. He was killed in action on 4 May 1917.
