594/Lieut G.H. Earp enlisted as a Private 17 Aug 1914 in Melbourne aged 23. Place of birth Maryborough, New Zealand. Departed Aust as part of 5th Bn AIF on HMAT A3 on 21.10.14. Landed on ANZAC on day one, 25.4.15. Admitted to No2 Field Ambulance, ANZAC 5.7.15 (Sick), transferred to a Fleetsweeper 5.7.15 and taken to Hospital on Mudros Island. Transferred to Egypt on HMT 'Southland'. Leave Egypt for return to Gallipoli 26.10.15 on HMT Canada. Rejoined 5Bn 1.11.15 on Gallipoli. Evacuated. Depart Alexandria for France on HMT 'Ballarat' 26.3.16. Promoted 2/Lieut 11.4.16. Transferred to 1st Pioneer Bn AIF in France 14.4.16. Remained serving in France and the UK until departing for home in 1919 on 'Kashmir' as ship's subaltern. A copy of a letter exists in Lt Earp's service file which he wrote to the Red Cross in 1915 in which he asks the Red Cross to notify the families of two of his mates, who were shot at the landing as they lay on the beach beside him at approx 4.30PM, as to the circumstances of their deaths. They were 580 Pte/L.cpl H. Hodgman 5Bn (Mortlake, Vic) and 610 Pte R.C. Brownell 5Bn(New Town, Hobart, Tas. George Earp lived the majority of his post war life at Glenrowan, Victoria. He died on 27.11.1951 and is buried at Wangaratta.
