From 52nd Battalion AIF
Pte Archibald Henry CAREY was a stationer and newsagent who had served two years with the Queensland Volunteer Rifles. He enlisted in October 1916 and sailed with the 9th Reinforcements to the 52nd Bn in January 1917. He arrived in England in April and proceeded to join the battalion in Belgium in August. He was killed by a shell burst on the 19th of October. Private Robert Alexander GARDINER #2538 (RTA) reported later, ‘There were four of us in a shell hole, two were wounded and one killed and we could find no trace of Carey. He was just where the shell burst and must have been blown to pieces. He had in his pockets some postcards and photos of boys in the band etc…
