Thomas Hugh Burrett, Engineer, age 23, was born at Footscray, Melbourne, and enlisted on 8 November 1915 at Brisbane. He stated that he had 2 years previous naval service. He was assigned as Gunner on 11 January 1916 and embarked on 11 May with 9th Field Artillery Brigade.
He served in Western Europe with 3 Div Artillery Detachment, 3 Divisional Ammunition Column and 7 Field Artillery Brigade. The history of 27 Battery states that his role as a Signaller was to go over the top with infantry and to signal in the locations for gun crews to bombard.
Thomas was awarded his MM for his bravery at Clery. LG 14/5/1919, p6056; CAG 15/9/1919, p1364
The recommendation states: “From 30th August to 1st Sept. 1918, at Clery, Gunner Burrett did invaluable work under heavy shell fire in maintaining communications between the battery and O.P. His work has called for exceptional qualities, and at no time did he fail to maintain communication, and so keep the battery advised of the situation and enable fire to be directed on to the enemy”
He returned to Australia on 12 May 1919 and was discharged on 14 August 1919. He died in 1976.
