23 Apr 1918: Wounded AIF WW1, Corporal, 602, 12th Infantry Battalion, Second occasion. Wound to the back. Embarked for England on 29 April 1918 aboard HS Jan Breydel
1 May 1918: Honoured Military Medal, For gallantry and devotion to duty at Meteren on 23rd April 1918. Corporal O'Neil led a section of bombers in an attack on the enemy's position. He personally bombed a machine gun which was causing casualties, killing several of the crew and capturing the gun. He then led his men with great skill in a bombing attack down the trench and cleared same. Although wounded at the beginning of the attack he carried on and only led when ordered by his platoon commander. He set a fine example of courage and devotion to duty to his men. Commenced return to Australia on 4 November 1918 aboard HT Durham disembarking on 23 December 1918

On 21 July 1928 Frank married Alice Kathleen Jones in Registry Office, Adelaide, SA.
