"Distinguished Conduct Medal: 'On 29 September, 1918, during operations south of Bony, when the enemy were counter attacking, he took charge of his platoon when his platoon commander became a casualty. He grasped the situation quickly, and fearlessly exposing himself himself he very successfully handled his men and selected positions for snipers and Lewis guns. The manner in which he disposed of his platoon was responsible for the breaking up of the counter attacks.'

Military Medal: 'On 1st September, 1918, during operations North of PERONNE, after his Company had reached its final objective, this man pushed out with his Lewis Gun well forward of our position and succeeded in cutting off a number of the retreating enemy. He inflicted heavy casualties and was responsible for the capture of enemy prisoners.'
