A well known image (see profile picture) of Trooper William Henry Rankin Woods 1st Australian Light Horse. Killed in action on the 15th May, 1915. Remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.

Son of Flora Ann Woods, of "Talokan," Gordon Rd., Chatswood, New South Wales, and the late William Frederic Woods. Native of Mudgee.

"William Henry Rankin Woods was born at Mudgee, New South Wales, on 28th November, 1873, the son of Mr. William Frederic Woods and Mrs. Flora Ann Woods (nee Macdonald). He was educated at Mudgee, and at the Fort Street Public School, Sydney.

He entered the Bank’s service at Head Office on 27th January, 1891. On 16th September, 1893, he was transferred to Temora; to Perth on 8th April, 1897; to Coolgardie on 1st December of that year; returned to Perth in February, 1900, and on 15th March, 1901, went to Kalgoorlie; thence to Head Office on 28th June, 1902, and entered the Chief Accountant’s Department at Head Office, on 1 st October, 1910.

William Henry Rankin Woods enlisted in August, 1914, with the 1st Light Horse Regiment and was killed in action by shrapnel at Gallipoli on 15th May, 1915.

During the time he was in the army Trooper Woods was much in demand at concerts, as he was a good singer. His genial personality and pluck made him very popular, and Colonel Meredith, writing after his death, said that he was proud of him as a man and a soldier, and if he had been spared he would soon have obtained a commission."

William Harry Rankin Woods was born in Mudgee, New South Wales on the 28th of November 1873. Where he worked as a bank clerk until he traveled to Sydney and enlisted on the 25th of August 1914 at the age of 32

His unit, the 1st Light Horse Regiment, Machine Gun Section embarked from sydney, New South Wales, on board Transport A16 Star of Victor on 1914. He then went on to recive three medals: 1914-15 star, British War Medals and Victory Medal and at the age of 39 he succumbed to his wounds and died on the 15th of May 1915.

PRIVATE W. H. R. WOODS.
Private W. H. R. Woods, better known as Wylie Woods, is reported killed in action. He was a son of the late Captain Woods, an old resident of Mudgee, and he was educated at Newington College. Private Woods was employed for over 20 years in the Bank of New South Wales. He was well known in metropolitan musical circles. He left Sydney for Cairo with the Australian Light Horse. Four of his brothers and his brother-in-law (Dr. Aspinall) are now at the front.
