Son of William and Catherine Townrow who were a pioneering family in the Winston area. He attended the Dry Tank School and then worked on the family farm. Along with his brother Ned, he played football for Nullawil.
Nullawil folk deplore the loss of Pte T. C. Townrow, fourth son of Mrs T. Townrow, of Winston, who was killed in action on September 26th, whilst serving his country in the 15th Brigade. He was 31 years of age and resided in the district for 22 years, previously coming from Tallygaroopna. As a sportsman he was well known in the surrounding districts, having won a name for fair and clean sport and regard for his opponents. He left his farm in his brothers hands, and sailed with the A I.F. on October 3rd, 1916.
