Wilfred was the son of Joseph Vaughan and Rose Vaughan of 36 Monopoly, Pendleton, Lancashire, England. He was born in Manchester, England, and later moved to Adelaide before joining the AIF. His address at enlistment was Glen Road, Magill, South Australia and his mother was his next of kin. Wilfred's occupation before his service in the war was a gardener and he had no prior military experience.
Wilfred married, Annie Vaughan on 1st October 1915 at the Methodist Church at Kent Town, however, his mother remained his next of kin until December 1918 when his wife sent a statutory declaration about their marriage and requested to be replaced as Wilfred's next of kin.
Wilfred Vaughan enlisted on 26 July 1915 and trained with the 3rd Battalion. He embarked as part of the 10th Battalion but was transferred to the 50th Battlaion in Egypt in February 1916. He fought in the Middle East and then was sent to France in January 1917 and was transferred to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade.
Throughout 1917, Mr Vaughan was sent to the hospital several times due to infection. In October 1918, Wilfred was given leave to return to the UK. Then, in November, he returned from leave and was still in France when the war ended (11th November).
On the 13th of March 1919, Wilfred finally moved from France to England for demobilisation and was then held in a holding camp, where soldiers were waiting to be shipped. During June, he finally arrived back in Adelaide on the ship ‘China’ disembarking in Adelaide 6 June 1919. Finally, on the 29th of March 1919, he was officially discharged from the AIF.
He lived for 36 years after the war, then eventually passed away in Adelaide. After Wilfred passed, a memorial was held at the Payneham District Council Roll of Honour, and he was later buried at West Terrace Cemetery (AIF section), Kendrew Oval, row 18, grave 16.
