Gunner James Raymond Oates (Service No:26809) enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne on 26 February 1916, and was a Driver attached to 3rd Divisional Ammunition Column on 7 September 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Plymouth on board HMAT A15 Port Sydney. Driver Oates served on the Western Front, and was a Gunner attached to 3rd Field Artillery Brigade on 31 May 1919 when he embarked from England for Melbourne on board HT Aeaneas. Gunner Oates was Discharged on 26 August 1919. In WWII, he served in the ACMF as a Sapper (Service No:N75605) with 2 Engineers Base Stores Depot and 2 Maintenance Platoon RAE - appointed Carpenter - from 30 December 1940 to 4 January 1946.

James was born in Glen Innes, New South Wales in 1898, second of five children of Hugh Oates (b1869 in Clunes, Victoria) and Hannah Tyson (b1867 in Clunes, Victoria). Hugh and Hannah married in 1892 in Victoria, moving to Glen Innes in 1894 and then settling in Wagga Wagga. Hugh was a Tailor and Mercer, and served with the militia and briefly in WWI (30 April to 14 July 1917) - medically unfit. Hugh was Mayor of Wagga Wagga (1915/1916 and 1922/1923) and an Alderman, Justice of the Peace and District Coroner. He was active in his Church - Trustee, Circuit Steward and Lay Preacher (travelling to outlying parishes on his bicycle) - and was a member of the Wagga Base Hospital Board and President of the Good Street School P&C Association.

James was working in Wagga Wagga as a Farmer in 1916, and following his Discharge, was in Wagga Wagga in 1925 when he married Elsie Holloway (b1898 in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales). James and Elsie settled in Wagga Wagga, where they raised their family and James worked as a Farmer and Carpenter. Following his Discharge from the ACMF in 1946, James and Elsie settled in Sydney, where James worked as a Carpenter. James died in 1957 and Elsie in 1988.
