Biography

"THE LATE PRIVATE M. J. SANDOW.

Mr. J. M. Sandow, of St. Peters, has been notified that his nephew, Private Maxwell J. Sandow, has been killed in action in France. Private Sandow was one of four brothers who enlisted, the others being Private Roy Sandow, Sergeant-Major Clifford Sandow, and Private Hartley Sandow, sons of the late W. H. Sandow, of Nhill, Victoria, and formerly of South Australia. With his brother he was wounded on the second day after the famous landing at Gallipoli. He was invalided to England and on his recovery he again went into active service in France, and was mortally wounded. He was a fine type of soldier, over 6 ft. in height, 23 years of age, and beloved by all who knew him." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 26 Aug 1916 (nla.gov.au)
