Undeterred by enemy Machine gun and shell fire which never slackened he attended to the wounded with bust little rest for 20 hours. Again and again he risked his life and did not cease work until the whole section was cleared of wounded. At Dompierre on 28 August his conduct was worthy of the highest praise. His Company was forced to temporarily withdraw from the Sugar Factory leaving casualties behind. Utterly regardless of his own safety, he went forward, dressed the wounded, and carried them back to safety through the heaviest machine gun fire London Gazette 17 June 1919, page 7694, position 92 Commonwealth of Australia Gazette on 10 October 1919, page 1496, position 106
