Private Stanley Williams Adams Story
Adams, Stanley Williams,Private 5970
Born: Hawkesdale, Victoria
He enlisted into the AIF on the 05-04-1916, he was a groom by trade and was allocated to the 19th Reinforcements of the 14th Battalion AIF. His next of Kin is listed as his mother Mary Ann Adams. It is interesting to Note that Stanley was rejected from enlisting previously due to his Height, being only 5 Feet 2 inches tall, this didn’t stop this gallant soldier being cited for Gallantry a number of times during the War. Stanley was Wounded in Action in France on the 11-04-1917 and was later Gassed on the 08-02-1918. He was recommended for the Military Medal however he never received this award, it was downgraded to the Belgium Croix De Guerre, Listed in the CG 27-11-1918 Page 2262:
“During the operations at MESSINES on the 8th June 1917 this man was a runner and took messages through several heavy barrages; he also guided the Company’s ration parties, and at all times displayed the greatest courage, and resourcefulness. In the operations at ZONNEBEKE on 26th/28th (Inclusive) September 1917 he showed a magnificent example of courage determination and dedication to duty in the performance of his duty as a runner, between the line and Battalion Headquarters, through the heaviest shell fire. His example in action has been of the upmost value to his Company”.
He was also awarded a Congratulatory Card: The Corps Commander expressed appreciation of the Gallant services rendered during recent operations on the 31-10-1917. and also mentioned in routine orders for Gallantry in 1918.
