A Forgotten Digger of The Great War and Sandgate Cemetery.
75 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 22nd November 1944, Private Frederick William Whitmore, Australian Army Veterinary Hospital, labourer from 117 Fern Street, Islington, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 64. ANGLICAN 1-47. 21.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 8th June 1880 to John Charles and Margaret Whitmore, Frederick enlisted June 1915 with the 1st Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 21.3.1917, myalgia and rheumatism and wounded in action - 4.4.1918 (gassed), Mr Whitmore was invalided home December 1918 with premature senility and debility.

His name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour (Board 1, unveiled on the 26th February 1916). Name not inscribed on the Islington St. Mark's Anglican Church Roll of Honour.
Frederick had been resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so I have placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
