From How We Served

The final resting place for; - 1105 & 1952 Private John Joseph Whelan of Williamstown, Victoria had been employed as a shipping clerk when he first enlisted for War Service on the 23rd of September 1914 and was allocated to the 15th Battalion 1st AIF.

John was embarked for Egypt but was deemed medically unfit by the end of April and was returned to Australia, where he took his discharge in Hobart, Tasmania on the 15th of July 1915. On the 19th of June 1916 John again presented himself for enlistment at Claremont, Tasmania and was allocated to reinforcements for the 40th Battalion 1st AIF, and by the 8th of August he was being shipped to England for further training, where he arrived on the 30th of September 1916.

Taken on strength with his Battalion, John entered the trenches at the end of November, and remained on duty until he was evacuated sick with influenza on the 2nd of January 1917 but was back with his Unit five days later, and continued his service until he was again evacuated with influenza on the 17th of July. Following his hospitalization, he was sent back to England where he arrived on the 27th of September, and was placed into convalesce at Weymouth.

Moved to Hurdcott on the 29th of October, it was considered that John was deemed as no longer fit for active service and he was sent for further convalesces at Sutton Veney on the 19th of February 1918 where he would remain until he was made ready for his repatriation back to Australia due to suffering debility.

John departed England on the 15th of April and arrived back on the 12th of June and received his second discharge from the 1st AIF whilst in Melbourne on the 19th of July 1918.
