Son of James George Upton and Jane Upton nee Shepherd of Dixon Street, Malvern, Victoria.
1 August 1917 - enlisted at Hamilton, Victoria, with the 29th Battalion and with the rank of Private
15 October 1918 - transferred to the 58th Battalion
1 August 1919 - promoted to Sergeant
Commenced return to Australia on 8 September 1919 aboard HT Raranga disembarking on 27 October 1919
Medal: British War Medal
15 February 1920 - discharged at the 3rd Military District as medically unfit
