Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Archie was the youngest of six children of John Greig Smith (b1850 in Scotland) and Margaret Jane Clacher (b1854 in Brisbane, QLD). John had immigrated in 1857 with his parents and siblings and he and Margaret married in 1875 in Brisbane, QLD). They lived in Brisbane, Bundaberg, Esk, Pioneer, and Airdmillin in the Lower Burdekin where John worked as a Bookkeeper, Clerk and Sugar Boiler.

Archie was a Clerk in Esk, QLD in 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF. He served as a Private (Service No:2399) with 42nd and 41st Infantry Battalions and was Discharged in June 1918. Brother Thomas (Private; Service No:2392) also served in the 41st Infantry Battalion in WWI - the brothers embarked together.

Returning to Esk, Archie worked as a Clerk before moving to Brisbane in the early 1920s. In 1939 he married Elsie Mary Schofield (b1908 in Manchester, England). Elsie immigrated with her parents in 1914, arriving in Brisbane QLD on board the Roscommon. She was working as a Typist in Brisbane before she married Archie. The couple settled in Brisbane where Archie worked as a Clerk until his death in 1948.
