Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Harold was the second child and only son of George Robert McKelvey and Cecilia Jane McKelvey (nee Jewell). He enlisted on 1 March 1918 and was deployed as a Gunner in the HeavyArtillery Group 36, 18th Reinforcements (Siege Artillery Brigade) serving in France and England. His service record indicates his occupation on enlistment was a Stockman.

When he was born in Victoria his father, George Robert, was in partnership with his brother William Alexander McKelvey in a number of successful butcher shops in and around Melbourne. George Robert eventually took over the shops and would later amalgamate his buisnesses with Sir William Anglis. As a result George Robert moved the family to NSW to run some of the Anglis operations. He established a couple of butcher shops in Sydney with his sons and Harold worked in the buisnesses as a butcher until he retired.

Harold is the cousin of Cyril Arthur McKelvey Ser. No's.: 292 & 21760 and nephew of Charles Edward McKelvey aka 'Claude' No.:689898. Harold's photo was provided by his daughter Alison.
