A shop assistant from Geelong, Victoria prior to enlistment, 3566 Pte Rody Richard Larkin embarked along with his brother 3577 Pte Martin William Larkin with the 8th Reinforcements, 22nd Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Afric on 5 January 1916. He later transferred to the 58th Battalion and was promoted to Corporal.

Two brothers, 3577 Pte Martin William Larkin and 1607 Pte Patrick Joseph Larkin were later killed in action and Rody returned to Australia on compassionate grounds on 26 July 1918 and was discharged.
