Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Roy (Godfrey Roy Alexander) was the eleventh of eighteen children of John Godfrey Johnson (b1848 in Bolivia, NSW) and Ellen Folwell (b1859 in Stawell, Victoria). John (a Labourer) and Ellen married in 1875 in Heathcote, Victoria and lived in Victoria and NSW before moving their family to WA by 1894. The family settled initially in Perth WA where John worked as a Labourer, before moving to Mt Zion in Darkan where he was a Farmer. Family anecdote has John being born in Bolivia in South America - his parents were sponsored Assisted Immigrants from England, arriving in NSW in 1841 on board the Brothers. They lived in Bolivia, NSW before following the gold rushes to Victoria and WA.

Roy worked as a Farm Hand in Darkan WA, and in February 1917 enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:7491). He served with 16th Infantry Battalion in France, and was hospitalised with Influenza. Roy was Discharged in August 1919 - he was one of eight brothers who served in WWI and/or WWII.

Returning to Darkan WA, Roy was working as a Farm Hand in 1920 when he married Clarice Elizabeth Marian Wild (b1895 in Moama, NSW) - Clarice's parents had moved the family to Darkan WA by 1910. Roy and Clarice settled in Darkan, and by 1931 Roy was a Farmer.

In June 1942 Roy enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:WW84764) and was attached to 12 Battalion (Jarrah) VDC. In 1949 Roy and Clarice were living at 'Glen Valley' in Gillangarra WA, and by 1958 Roy had retired and he and Clarice moved in York WA. By 1968 when Roy died they were living in Perth WA. Clarice died in 1975.
