Stewart McGowan was buried in the field at the time of his death but during 1920 his remains were exhumed and buried in the Guards Cemetery. His brother Lieutenant Robert James McGowan 5th Pioneer Battalion AIF, won the Military Cross at Bellicourt, during September 1918 in France.

They were the sons of William and Jessie McGown of Launceston, Tasmania.
