Percy Stansfield enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy during February 1913. He served as a stoker aboard HMAS Sydney until he deserted in Hobart on 25 January 1914. He was ‘recovered’ nine days later and had to serve 90 days in prison before he was discharged on 4 May 1914.
He was one of five sons of James Thomas and Marion Stansfield, of Franklin, Tasmania, who served Australia during WW1. His younger brother, 2950 Pte. Stanley Robert Stansfield 52nd Battalion AIF was killed in action at Mouquet Farm in 1916.
Percy landed at Gallipoli during September 1915 with the rest of the 26th Battalion. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on Gallipoli before the evacuation but soon lost that rank due to problems with adjusting to army discipline. He was wounded twice on the Western Front, shell shock at Ypres in October 1917 and a leg wound during September 1918. He eventually returned to Franklin, Tasmania, during 1919.
