Pte Clarence Powell enlised 12th February 1916 and was dead by 19th July 1916. He had been in the service of the AIF for barely 6 months. 

His remains were found and identified in 1926 along with many others in a mass grave in the neighborhood of Fromelles. Identification was made by means of a knife handle bearing his name and unit.

Pte Powell had attempted to join the AIF previously but had been knocked back due to bad teeth. He was a champion swimmer of his local swimming club.

He was survived by his wife Mildred A Powell.
