Biography contributed by David Barlow

Trooper August Wilfred Horsell 2890 of the 3rd Light Horse Regiment (born 1894) originally enlisted in the army on 16 February 1915 but was discharged on 6 April 1915 while undergoing training with the 27th Battalion

Re-enlisting under the alias Frederick Dillon Horsell on 4 June 1915 (his brother’s name), he embarked from Adelaide with the 10th Infantry Battalion aboard HMAT Anchises on 2 September 1915

He transferred to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment on 16 February 1916 and in June 1918 he formally reverted to his proper name of August Wilfred Horsell

The Nominal Roll shows that August Wilfred Horsell 2890 of the 3rd Light Horse as RTA (Returning to Australia) on 17 July 1919 aboard the ship Dunluce Castle

During his service he suffered several bouts of illness and was injured by shrapnel in the field.  He died of illness in Keswick Hospital, Adelaide on 29 June 1920 (Age 26)

His brother Frederick Dillon enlisted as Dillon Frederick 1759 on 22 September 1915 and embarked on 18 November 1915 with the 1st Light Horse Brigade / 3rd Light Horse Regiment aboard HMAT Geelong A2 and later transferred to the Field Ambulance

The Nominal Roll shows that Dillon Frederick Horsell 1759 of the Field Ambulance as RTA (Returning to Australia) on 24 July 1919 aboard the ship Dongola

Frederick Dillon S212822 served in WW2 with the VDC - born 14 August 1892

Note 1 - AWM photo shows alias for August Wilfred as being Dillon Frederick instead of Frederick Dillon & his second enlistment as occurring in September instead of June (https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C1219732)

Note 2 - The NAA digitized service file “HORSELL Frerick Dillon [HORSELL August Wilfred] Service Number 2890” actually contains all WW1 records for August Wilfred (aka FD) 2890 and Frederick Dillon (aka DF) 1759

Note 3 - the AIF entry for Dillon Frederick Horsell 1759 is mostly correct but the AIF entry for Frederick Dillon Horsell 2890 should be changed to August Wilfred Horsell 2890 and adds in some Nominal Roll information for DF 1759 (“Enlistment date 4 June 1915 / Date of enlistment from Nominal Roll 22 September 1915” & “Regimental number from Nominal Roll - 1759”)

Note 4 - the father of AW & FD was James Horsell (1875 - 1930) who served in WW1 with the 1st Remount Unit from September 1915 to November 1916 - Regimental Number 620
