Robert McKay was born 3rd of January, 1879 in New South Wales. He enlisted in the AIF on the 1st of May, 1916 in Bathurst and was allocated the Service Number 4416. On enlistment, McKay presented with a ruddy complexion and had brown hair and eyes. McKay stood 5’9.5” tall and was 36 and 10 months old on his enlistment day. McKay could be identified by a brown scar on left shin. Prior to enlistment, McKay worked as a labourer.

McKay was assigned to the 3rd Tunnelling Company, an engineering unit that was formed to dig under enemy lines.
