Rupert Wesley Simmons

Rupert Wesley Simmons was born in 30th May 1891 at Washburton, Milton, New South Wales, Australia. He was the son of James Simmons and Eliza Wentworth.
Rupert Simmons is an Anzac who served in World War One.
On 22nd January 1916, Rupert enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force for service overseas during the First World War. He was allocated to the 12th Australian Infantry Battalion, 3rd Brigade and, together with other reinforcements, embarked for France and the Western Front on 20th April aboard the SS Hawkes Bay. The battalion's first major action in France was at Pozieres in the Somme Valley in July 1916. After Pozieres, the battalion fought at Ypres in Flanders and then returned to the Somme for winter.

Rupert Simmons was a prisoner of war during The Great War.
Rupert was captured at Langicourt on 15th April 1917 and became a prisoner of war for the next nineteen months, incarcerated initially at Limburg and thn at Friedrichsfeld, Germany. He was repatriated to England on 30th December 1918, where he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service to his country.

Rupert married young widow, Susannah "Queenie" Eagles nee Neale on 8th January 1919 in St George the Martyr's Church, Southwark, Surrey, England. He immediately took to her six month-old daughter, as did Lily to him. Rupert returned to Australia 12th July 1919 with Susannah and Lily, whereupon they settled at Stanthorpe, on Queensland's 'Granite Belt', on a soldier-settlement allotment of land and raised a family of five children.

Rupert passed away on 9th September 1973 at Brisbane, Queensland.
